Peggy-O
Lots of Peggy-O comments. I love variations of songs the Dead have played throughout their career. It's like cool jazz!

No Donna...First Peggy-O?
First of all, another fantastic Soundboard from Charlie Miller (he's like a rock star in these parts you know...)! Donna is noticably absent from this
...
show. The soundcheck is cool to hear, especially Jerry during Peggy-O, "that's a C there Keith". I gather since the chord structure was being learned during soundcheck, that this is the first performance of Peggy-O, I may be wrong. The drums are much faster than later versions of the song also. Another great '73 show for some Holiday Cheer!

Everything and more ......
Four stars 'cos of the missing tracks, the odd tape-splice and the vocals occasionally going 'awol' - can't give it five. But, allowing for those glitches,

very, very ,very good - and, for someone like me who needs Donna Jean like he needs a hole in the head, this is great 'cos for one reason or another she's a 'no-show'. Earlier reviews have detailed all the great tracks/segues and I won't argue with them - for me the first Peggy-O (both), Jack Straw from Wichita, LLR, China/Rider, Me and Bobby, 'Eyes' - heh, just about everything make this a special show. If only Pigpen was there doing a "Mr. Charlie" I'd have thought I'd died and 'gone to heaven'. Don't argue with the good Dr. - he knows best .........

Great Concert
Just wanted to confirm that indeed this source is missing Sugar Magnolia and Casey Jones. Additionally the pitch does need to be corrected. In my opinion
...
it's fairly severe. It's not an extra hertz or two higher than normal. It might be as much as a 1/4 or a 1/2 beat too fast. It's listenable but I can't give it 5 stars.

this is a solid show from late 73.....not the best of the year by far but worth a look if youve got 12/6.....11/11....8/1 and the RFK run already.....if
...
not i would hit those shows first....also it seems that the set 2 closer, sugar mag, and the encore, casey jones, are missing.....d/l hasnt finished yet so perhaps they are mislabed or whatever

Peggy-O
I love this show and this Peggy-O, it is very special to me, Yes the speed is a tad off, I can confirm with my guitar, it's actually obvious, so long as
...
you are tuned. The recording may be fast, but so is the band, compared to 77, 5-9-77 is great, as is 6-29-76, but this version is a classic. In the sound check it sounds as if the band is just learning the tune that night, you can here jerry point out the key to Keith, ( Keith ends up playing it in show as if it was his disertation in the academy of music) and Bobby shines too. Jerry in some ways takes a backseat to the action, (he did that in FOTD as I recall, and well no complaints there!!!). It's different, by the time they play this again in 12-18. still good, but this is magical. Finding a crisper copy of this date would make my day.

Very slightly fast
Yep, this source is a tad fast, but we're talking significantly less than a half-step sharp. You must have perfect pitch (or listen to many many many
...
tapes ;) ). I always chalked the tinny vocals in this era to the nature of the sound system, not to pitch problems. I definitely see (saw) pitch problems occur more in the 76-77 era tape sources. Thankfully, they're easily correctable now. Used to have a high-gen tape of parts of this for years with, among other things, the second Eyes solo excised. This has been one of my favorite d/l's since finding the archive. It's got spectacular 73 sound. Highlights are (surprise) China>Rider, Playin, WRS, and the Eyes>Dew. IMHO, this is the best Eyes>Dew they ever performed. There is no hesitation in the chord changes in the extended jam out of Eyes, and the chord they land on for Dew's arrival will make you pee in your pants. For those of you who dislike Donna, she's absent. A keeper.

I think there might be a slight bit of fastness on the master. The voices of Bobby and Jerry sound too high. The tempo's are within range, a bit quick
...
perhaps, yet still it sings a little off. I have heard a number of great shows from this period that sound as if they were recorded at a too-fast speed. Does anyone else hear that???????

I recently received this show in trade and was really impressed. It didn't seem to circulate much prior to LAMA. Very tasty playing and crisp SBD quality.

BE Women, Deal and Playin really shine in Set One, plus the first ever Peggy-O, a little shaky but sweet. And the jam sequence of WRS>Eyes is very hot, landing you in a very soulful Morning Dew from Jerry. Don't pass this one up folks!
